Walking Brattleboro: One Foot Before the Other, After Another

Brattleboro, VT

Fall 2022

Participants were invited to meet at the museum for a shared experiential walk. Following a script through a familiar urban landscape, participants were invited to experience the streets as they had not before. Guided by a script and a series of non-iconic landmark cues, participants made their way to the city commons.

Workshop: Walking as Learning to See-Brattleboro Museum + Art Center

THE SCRIPT

Exiting the museum, head towards the Co-Op, making your way across the pedestrian bridge over the Whetstone Brook. Pause long enough to see the sky reflected in the water beneath. Continue towards the Transportation Center. Use the exterior staircase to reach Elliot Street, taking in the views on your way up.

Cross Elliot Street, head towards the traffic light, and take a left into the parking lot of Harmony Place. Walk towards High Thai. Reaching High Street, turn uphill and once again enter a public parking lot, walking past the colorful barricades. At the far side of the parking lot, exit onto Grove Street and turn downhill to reach Main Street. Go left. Stay to the left at the fork—now Linden Street.

Continue walking to the Town Commons. Enter the Commons from the crosswalk at the "No Parking" sign. Find a place to sit among the trees. Using your "I Remember a Tree" card, write your story of a tree. Return to the museum via Main Street.
