A Sensory Walk From the Meadow to the Woodland
Westport Land Trust
Westport, MA
Summer 2021
Participants were invited to meet at the land trust for a shared experience. To walk from the meadow into the woodlands following a script. A familiar landscape to all of the participants. They were invited to experience the trails as they had not before.
THE SCRIPT
As you pass from the meadow into the woodland,
Notice the pile of tree trunks next to the milled wood—what do you think?
Entering the woodland,
Take note of the quality of light,
The feel of the air.
Continue on the main trail—yellow.
As you walk in silence,
Be observant of your senses.
Sight is our way of negotiating the world around us.
Think about seeing with all of your senses.
What do you hear, taste, smell?
What is your sense of touch as you walk?
You will cross over a felled tree.
What landmarks form your path?
Keep going.
When you come to the red trail, take this (going straight).
Shortly, there is a rise.
On the other side, a surprise.
Find the flat rectangular rock. Stand with your back to the rock,
Looking at the “surprise,” make a wish.
Return to the entrance of the red trail. This time, go left to continue a short way on the yellow trail.
You will come to the orange trail on the right, where there is a tree with a square cut into it.
Take the orange trail back to where it meets the yellow trail.
Follow this back to the entrance of the woodland path.
In conversation with others, ask: what was the unexpected?
What did one experience that they had not before?
